Pediatric Surgery Fellowships
This is a two-year fellowship with ACGME approval. The fellowship is centered at Norton Children's Hospital, where the fellow works closely with the general surgical team in the overall management of pediatric surgical patients including a busy trauma service and care of patients with surgically repaired congenital anomalies. They average 4,500 cases per year.
Norton Children's Hospital
For more than 116 years, Norton Children's Hospital and its predecessor hospitals have provided children of Kentucky and Southern Indiana the best health care available without regard to their families' ability to pay. Norton Children's Hospital is Kentucky's only free-standing, full-service pediatric care facility dedicated exclusively to caring for children. The 263-bed hospital serves as the primary pediatric teaching facility for the University of Louisville School of Medicine. In 2007 Norton Children's Hospital was recognized for excellence in nursing care with a Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Norton Children's Hospital is the only magnet designated hospital in the city and one of only 20 children's hospitals recognized in the country.
Pediatric Surgery Fellowship Application Procedures
The Division of Pediatric Surgery at the University of Louisville participates in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) developed by the Association of American Medical Colleges. This service transmits residency applications, letters of recommendation, and other supporting credentials from the applicants and their general surgery training programs via the Internet.
Entry qualifications include the completed residency application, satisfactory completion of a five-year ACGME-accredited program in General Surgery, letters of recommendation from individuals who can speak to the applicant's unique qualifications to become a pediatric surgeon, and receipt of USMLE and ABSITE scores.
Application materials are reviewed and approximately 20 applicants are invited to interview on one of several interview days. Each applicant meets with all faculty members and the current fellow. The process is then completed via the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).

Resident On-Call Activities
The objective of on-call activities is to provide residents with continuity of patient care experiences throughout a 24-hour period. In-house call is defined as those duty hours beyond the normal workday when residents are required to be immediately available in the assigned institution.
Continuous on-site duty, including in-house call, does not exceed 24 consecutive hours. Residents may remain on duty for up to four additional hours to participate in didactic activities, transfer care of patients, conduct outpatient clinics, and maintain continuity of medical and surgical care as defined in Specialty and Subspecialty Program Requirements.
No new patients, as defined in Specialty and Subspecialty Program Requirements, may be accepted after 24 hours of continuous duty. A new patient is defined as any patient for whom the surgery service or department has not previously provided care.
There is one day of in-house call per week for the Pediatric Surgery resident and the PGY-4. For residents junior to this level, in-house call occurs no more frequently than every third night, averaged over a four-week period. The residents must comply with duty hour restrictions by leaving the hospital no later than four hours after call ends, accepting no new patients during this four-hour period, and not returning to the hospital for at least ten hours.
At-home call (pager call) is defined as call taken from outside the assigned institution. The frequency of at-home call is not subject to the every third night limitation. However, at-home call is not so frequent as to preclude rest and reasonable personal time for each resident. Residents taking at-home call are provided with one day in seven completely free from all educational and clinical responsibilities, averaged over a 4-week period.
When residents are called into the hospital from home, the hours residents spend in-house are counted toward the 80-hour limit.
The program director and the faculty monitor the demands of at-home call in the program and make scheduling adjustments as necessary to mitigate excessive service demands and/or fatigue.
Pediatric Surgery Fellowships Conference Schedule
The two-year curriculum training program in pediatric surgery includes weekly conferences consisting of Radiology Conference, Morbidity and Mortality Conference, General Tumor Board, Surgical Tumor Board, Journal Club, Grand Rounds, and Pediatric Surgery Residents' Conference on varying topics.
