Chairman's Message
The University of Louisville, Department of Surgery, has a long and proud tradition
of excellence. From its inception in 1837, when the University of Louisville served
as the premier medical training ground for the western frontier of the United States,
the Department of Surgery has been at the forefront of surgical education, patient

Overview
The Department of Surgery at the University of Louisville School of Medicine has
9 outstanding divisions (general surgery, otolaryngology, communicative disorders,
pediatric surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, surgical oncology, thoracic
and cardiovascular, vascular and interventional, hand surgery), with 77 full-time
faculty members, and 2 residency and 9 fellowship programs, training a total of
77 residents and fellows. Among 123 US medical schools ranked, our Department
of Surgery is in the top 30% in NIH funding, totaling over $2M.

Dr. H. Sam Zhou and his research team have been awarded an R01 grant mechanism from
the National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute to study "Adenovirus
E1B55K Functions Related to Oncolytic Replication." Dr. Zhou has a laboratory with
Department of Surgery Chairman Dr. Kelly McMasters. The investigators seek to study
oncolytic replication of E1B55K-deleted adenoviruses and the viral protein functions
related to cyclin E up-regulation in tumor cells. The long-term goal of this work
is to increase the effectiveness of oncolytic cancer gene therapy.

Dr. David Cunningham has been appointed as the Chief of the Division of Communicative Disorders

David R. Cunningham, Ph.D., Professor and interim Chief of Audiology, has been appointed as the Chief of the Division of Communicative Disorders, which includes Audiology and Speech Pathology. As voted recently by UofL Medical Council, the Divisions of Audiology and Speech Pathology have now been re-combined under a single Division of Communicative Disorders. Dr. Cunningham received his PhD at the University of Kansas and has been a faculty member in the Department of Surgery for more than 31 years.

Dr. Arun Gadre has been named a 2009 MOSAIC Award recipient

Dr. Arun Gadre has been named a 2009 MOSAIC Award recipient by Jewish Family and
Career Services for the work he does both in the general and immigrant communities.
Dr. Gadre is the Heuser Hearing Institute Endowed Professor in Otology and Neurotology
and an Associate Professor in the Division of Otolaryngology at the University of
Louisville. He is also the medical director at the Heuser Institute where he practices.
In addition, he has traveled to

India at his own expense to teach advanced techniques to local caregivers.
In honor of this special award, Mayor Jerry Abramson officially proclaimed May 12,
2009 as Arun Gadre Day in Louisville.
The MOSAIC (Multicultural Opportunities for Success and Achievement In our Community)
Award is hailed to be the “crown jewel” among events in the Jewish community.

Administrative Professional Award of the Year by the University of Louisville Business
and Professional Women.
